Gates at Airliewood
The estate on which Will Henry Coxe built his mansion covered 15 acres. A cast-iron fence with a massive gate encircled the property. The gate was manufactured by Wood and Perrot of Boston and was built identical to the one at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. Here is an orginal drawing of the same gate that stands today at the entrance to Airliewood. The gate and fence have been restored just as Coxe had installed. In 1862, four years after the mansion was built, Union forces camping on the lawn used the fence's finiels for target practice (below).The fence stood as it was for the next 130 years before it was replace with one recast from the old fence.
